Thomas D. Leland

About Thomas D. Leland

Tom Leland has spent nearly three decades trying complex cases — most of them at large international law firms.

He has first-chaired dozens of jury and bench trials, arbitrations, and evidentiary hearings in Colorado and across the country, and has argued appeals in the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

Big-firm training, big-firm cases

Tom began at Holland & Knight LLP in Washington, D.C. — first as a full-time law clerk while attending law school at night, then as an associate. He worked on litigation arising from high-profile aviation disasters, including the crash of TWA Flight 800, and second-chaired jury and bench trials and arbitrations in multimillion-dollar commercial and casualty matters involving satellites, weapons defense systems, maritime shipping, and oil and gas pipelines and refineries. Those years taught him the mechanics of trial work and the art of telling a persuasive story to a jury.

He moved his practice to Colorado in 2004, where he tried multiple jury trials in Colorado state and federal court, argued eminent domain and governmental immunity appeals in both Colorado appellate courts, and obtained two multimillion-dollar judgments against on behalf of a satellite television provider.

In 2009 he became a partner at Lathrop & Gage LLP, representing oil and gas exploration and production companies, midstream pipeline operators, and natural gas utilities in commercial, construction, land use, right-of-way, and environmental disputes.

In 2015 he returned to Holland & Knight as a founding partner of the firm’s new Denver office. Over the next eight years he built a national practice representing pipeline and transportation companies, investor-owned and municipal utilities, oil and gas producers, government contractors in litigation and GAO bid protests, airlines, railroads, engine manufacturers and repair stations, and companies defending consumer class actions under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

In 2023, Tom left big-firm practice to build a litigation boutique that focuses on winning trials and providing exceptional value to clients.

Practice today

Tom handles high-stakes commercial and business disputes — contract, business fraud, trade secret and unfair competition, partnership and shareholder disputes, and asset recovery — and defends companies, insurers, and institutions in significant tort and casualty litigation, including catastrophic injury, wrongful death, premises, products, and multi-party casualty matters. He represents colleges and universities in litigation, internal investigations, and institutional disputes. He serves as trial counsel and co-counsel to other firms and as regional and national counsel to companies with recurring litigation.
